Female Friendship Is the Attachment Style That Actually Holds
Romance gets the essays. I have written some of them myself. Slow burn, being chosen, the death of the situationship, the particular flinch a man does when you ask what this is on a Tuesday. All of that matters. I am a hopeless romantic with an attachment vocabulary and I will not pretend love is a side plot.
I will also tell you the truer structural sentence. Female friendship is the attachment style that actually holds.
Not in the greeting-card way. Not in the branded girls-night way that turns loyalty into a tote bag. In the load-bearing way. The beam in the wall. The person who remembers the small thing you said in March and asks about it in September without making a performance of having remembered. The voice note that arrives when a text would have felt like a slap. The bathroom-queue kindness that, on rare and ordinary evenings, refuses to stay temporary.
If you are a woman, you already know the feeling of being well-loved in public and poorly held in private. Dating can do that. Even good dating can do that, because romance is allowed to be weather. Friendship, the kind I mean, is closer to climate. It does not get a parade when it stays steady. It just stays.
I notice micro-shifts. That is my nervous system doing what it was trained to do. A delayed text from someone I am sleeping with can still send me counting tiles, steps, beats in a song, the squares on a bathroom floor. I laugh at myself for it, which is not the same as pretending it did not land. Anxious-secure is an unfashionable label and still the most accurate one I have. I crave depth and consistency. I recover when I can name the pattern.
Friendship is where that craving gets met without the theatrics. My close women do not treat consistency like a trap. They treat it like manners. They answer. They show up. They do not need me to be mysterious so they can keep their options looking like personality. There is no prize for being low-maintenance with your people. There is only the slow leak of having to perform ease in the one place that was supposed to let you put it down.
I keep a short inner list. Warm to strangers, exacting about who gets the second key. Essex taught me the first half. Approachability, the compliment in a queue, the willingness to start a conversation with a woman whose jacket is doing something precise. University taught me that some of those twelve-minute friendships stay twelve minutes and are still true. Adulthood taught me that a handful become climate.
The list is not a clique. Cliques are built from exclusion as identity. A list is built from evidence. Who remembered. Who came. Who told you the unflattering thing kindly and then did not use it later as a weapon. Who can sit in silence without turning it into a test. Who does not need you smaller so they can feel chosen.
Romance, even when it is good, often asks you to audition. Friendship at this level has already cast you.
I think about attachment theory in rooms it was not invited into. Give me a film and I will tell you who is avoidant before the meet-cute ends. It is a quirk. It is also how I stay honest about tolerance. Applied to women I love, the theory gets less fashionable and more useful. Secure does not mean unbothered. Secure means you can protest a rupture and expect repair. You can say I missed you and not have the sentence treated like a lawsuit. You can be a bit much on a Wednesday and still be wanted on Thursday.
My best friendships can hold protest. That is the test I should have used on men years earlier. Not chemistry. Repair. What happens after the clumsy thing. What happens when you name a hurt. If the answer is disappearance dressed as busy, that is data. Women teach each other this in kitchens at one in the morning, usually after one of us has spent a week translating a boy’s silence into literature. We do the translation. Then we look at each other and say the plain version. He is not confused. He is comfortable.
That plain version is love. It is also labour. I want to be honest about the labour because we keep pretending female friendship is only champagne and group chats. It is also the unpaid therapy we swore we would stop doing, except we do it for each other with consent and reciprocity, which is a different job from doing it for a man who thinks feelings are a scenic route you have to pack sandwiches for.
Reciprocity is the whole architecture. I will go first. I am generous in conversation. I remember. I give specific compliments, not the foggy kind that could apply to any woman in a nice top. Your mind did that elegant thing again. That colour is doing the work your face already started. You were kind in a room that did not require it. Specificity is how you tell someone they are not interchangeable. Cartoons are generic. People are not.
When a woman does that back, something in me that dating can make feral lies down. I am not hunting for proof I exist. I am in the room.
Voice notes matter more than they should, which is how you know they are doing psychological work. A text is efficient. A voice note is a body in your kitchen for ninety seconds. Tone. Breath. The laugh she did not tidy. I can be articulate on the page and still need to hear that a person is alive in time, not just in pixels. Perhaps that is the anxious part. Perhaps it is just the human part wearing a slightly academic coat. Either way I will send you six minutes about a tiny thing if the tiny thing has weather in it. I expect, not demand, that the women on my list can meet weather with weather.
University was where I first watched this attachment form in real time. Colchester, Wivenhoe Park, the walk across campus at 2 a.m. because neither of us wanted the conversation to stop. Sometimes the other person was a boy from a stats module. More often, in the memories that held, it was a woman who had been in the library and then in Sub Zero and then back in a kitchen that smelled of instant coffee and damp coats. We did both plots in one week. Problem sheets and FED. Thursday morning lectures and the leftover glitter of Wednesday. We did not make each other pick a lane.
That is a female gift I will not underestimate. The refusal to flatten you. A certain kind of man falls in love with one version and gets agitated when the other one arrives. The friend who has seen you in last night’s mascara and in a seminar voice does not need the myth. She has the dataset. Sample size sufficient. She knows you can hold a proof and a dance floor. She does not treat either as the real you to the exclusion of the other.
Essex warmth sits underneath this, refined rather than discarded. I grew up with the cartoon of us as loud and easy and unintelligent. I inverted it without sneering at the women the cartoon was aimed at. The part I kept was the social courage. Talk to her. Tell her the dress is right. Make the queue less lonely. Most of those moments stay seasonal. Once in a while the seasonal thing puts down a root. You exchange numbers without the dead ritual of “we should properly hang out.” You properly hang out. Months later she is the person you call when a date has gone strange and you need someone who will not turn it into content.
I am jealous in a particular way with lovers. Not the phone. The story. I want to be the one they tell the good thing to first. With friends I have a cleaner version of that hunger. I want to be on the inner list and I want them on mine. I do not need to be their only person. That is romance thinking, the scarcity model, the idea that love is a chair with room for one. Friendship at this level is more like a table. You can add a place setting without knocking anyone’s glass over. When a friend falls in love I do not experience it as theft unless she disappears so completely that I have to infer I was a waiting room.
Women do that disappearing sometimes. I have done a milder version of it, I will admit, in the early heat of a thing, when the new person feels like weather you could live in. The repair is simple and adult. You come back. You name it. You do not make your friend audition to be relevant again. If a romance requires you to starve the table to feed the chair, the romance is not as sophisticated as it thinks it is.
There is a cultural habit of treating female friendship as the pre-board for male attention. The group of girls as setting. The best friend as witness. I have no patience for that casting. My friends are not extras in a story whose prize is a man who can be chalant on a Tuesday. They are the plot that continues when he cannot. They are also the plot that continues when he can. A good partner does not compete with that table. He respects that I arrived with a climate.
If you have ever sat across from a woman who can hold your mess without becoming your mother, you know why I use attachment language here. Some friendships recreate the old anxious loop. Inconsistent replies. Scorekeeping. Soft cruelty called banter. I left those too. Loyalty is not an obligation to stay in a room that keeps tripping you. Loyalty is showing up for the people who show up, and having the spine to stop calling something a friendship when it is actually a slow argument.
Psychology as a party trick bores me. I did the degree. I can smell the performance when someone uses anxious and avoidant as weapons. With women I love I want the tools to make us kinder, not cleverer at winning. Name the pattern. Ask for the repair. Laugh when you have both been ridiculous. Go for a walk. Eat. Put a record on. Sunday lunch energy, even on a Thursday. Argument then gravy. That is family texture and it is friendship texture too.
I think about the ladies queue at a club that no longer exists, Chelmsford heat, bad lighting, a stranger telling me I looked like myself in that dress. We never met again. I still file it under evidence that women keep offering each other small secure bases in public. Then I think about the friend who will get on a train because my voice on the phone did the thing it does when I am counting tiles and pretending I am fine. That is the permanent version. Same instinct. Higher cost. Worth it.
Being read accurately is one of my deepest likes. It is rarer than desire. Desire is cheap and loud. Accuracy is quiet and expensive. A lover who desires you and misreads you will still leave you lonely. A friend who reads you will not fix every ache, but she will not gaslight the ache into a personality flaw. She will say, of course that delayed text landed, you are built for consistency, now eat something and do not send the third message. That sentence is aftercare. We talk about aftercare as if it belongs only to sex. It belongs to any intimacy that raises the pulse.
I want aftercare that includes talking. I want it from lovers. I get it, reliably, from the women on the list. We talk. We do not collapse and call the collapse closeness. Closeness is the conversation when the pulse slows. What landed. What you noticed. How we go on.
If you are in a season where romance is fog, lean on the climate you already have. That is not settling. That is correct use of structure. The culture will try to make you feel unchosen if you are uncoupled. The culture is being simplistic. Chosen is a practice, not a relationship status. My people choose me on ordinary Tuesdays. They choose me when I am sharp and when I am a bit much and when I am in Essex for the weekend and when I am talking about probability at dinner like it is gossip. I try to choose them back with the same granularity.
Granularity is love. The specific restaurant she hates. The exact way she takes tea. The film whose attachment dynamics she will let me analyse if I buy the popcorn. The mother she is complicated about. The promotion she is not ready to celebrate. The man she should leave. The man she should not leave yet, even though I am ready to write the speech. Holding your tongue can be intimacy too. Not every truth needs to arrive the night it becomes available. Timing is a form of care.
I am not a therapist. I said that in the profile of myself I would give a stranger, and I mean it. Friendship that turns into unpaid clinical hours will rot. We are allowed to say I cannot hold this tonight. We are allowed to send each other towards actual help when the weather is bigger than a kitchen. That boundary is also secure. Secure is not bottomless. Secure is honest about capacity.
What I want for us, speaking to you, is fewer performances of effortless sisterhood and more unglamorous reliability. Send the voice note. Remember the small thing. Tell her the compliment while she can still use it. Do not disappear into a man without a map back. Do not make her earn the version of you that is warm. Be chalant with your women. Enthusiasm is not uncool when it is specific. I missed you is allowed. I missed you is overdue.
Romance will keep getting the essays because yearning is louder than maintenance. I will keep writing some of those too. I like hotel lighting and a well-structured argument and a person who looks at my face as much as my body. I like being chosen, not just desired. I also know which attachment has survived my worst months without needing a grand gesture to restart. It was not a slow burn. It was a woman asking about the thing I mentioned in March.
That is the beam. That is the thing I will not treat as background. If you have one person like that, guard the table. If you have three, you are rich in a way that does not show up on anyone else’s metric. If you do not yet, start with the queue. Start with the specific compliment. Start with the reply that arrives. Climate is built, not found fully formed. I do not say that to make a project of other women. I say it because I am tired of watching us pour all the architecture into men and then act surprised when the house sways.
Put some beams where they will stay. Call it friendship if you want to keep it sounding light. I will keep calling it attachment, because that is what it has been in my life. The style that holds. The one that does not need a label negotiation on a Tuesday, because the label was never the point. The point was that when I reached out a hand, another woman’s hand was already there, and she had not spent the week deciding whether holding on would ruin her mystery.
