Start Over Without Performing a Brand New Personality Online
There is a particular modern instinct I distrust, and it arrives dressed as honesty. Something in your life shifts. You leave a job, or a man, or a city, or a version of your hair that had started to feel like a lie. Within forty eight hours the shift is being storyboarded. New caption. New grid. A paragraph that begins with “this era” and ends with a moral. Strangers are invited to clap for a self they have not met.
I am not against change. I change. I have changed. Second chances apply to selves as well as lovers, and I have needed both. What I will not do is perform a brand new personality for an audience that did not sit through the weather.
Life transitions are not content. They are weather. Weather does not owe you an aesthetic.
If you are a woman, you already know the pressure I mean, because it is aimed at us with peculiar accuracy. A man can go quiet for six months and call it work. A woman goes quiet and the feed starts inventing a narrative on her behalf. She is healing. She is glowing up. She is in her villain era, her soft era, her monastic era, her hot girl walk era. The vocabulary is borrowed from therapy and then put through a filter until it sparkles. Psychology as party trick. I did the degree. I can smell the performance.
The performance is not always vain. That is what makes it sticky. Sometimes it is a woman trying to keep herself company. Sometimes it is a woman who has been unseen for so long that announcing the change feels like the first time anyone has looked. I have sympathy for that. I have less sympathy for the industrial version, the one that treats a breakup like a product launch and a new job like a rebrand. You are not a company. You are allowed to become someone slightly different without issuing a press release.
I learned this the unfashionable way, by wanting to issue one and then noticing how cheap it felt in my mouth.
There was a stretch after a longer thing in my mid twenties, the one that taught me the difference between chemistry and compatibility. I could have packaged it. The lessons were right there, lined up like pull quotes. I had the language. Attachment, patterns, the delayed text I overthought and then laughed at myself for. I could have written the thread. I could have cut my hair as punctuation. I could have posted the train ticket home to Essex as if the coastline were a metaphor I had invented that week.
I went home instead. Sunday lunch. An argument about politics that turned into a record. The sea at Southend looking theatrical in winter light. Nobody asked me to summarise myself. That was the gift. Family is not always gentle, but it is rarely interested in your personal brand. They want to know whether you are eating. They want to know whether you are being kind. They can tell, without a caption, if the weather in you has changed.
Women are told that visibility is power. Sometimes it is. Sometimes visibility is just another job you forgot to resign from. I work with behavioural data. I know what gets measured gets performed. If the metric is engagement, your grief will learn to pose. If the metric is being seen as evolved, your healing will develop a tone of voice. I would rather be inaccurate in public and precise in private than the other way round.
Precision in private looks like this. You name the pattern without turning the naming into content. You say, to a friend who has earned it, I am leaving this because I kept translating his vagueness into a syllabus. You say, I took the job because the old one made my curiosity feel like a cute accessory. You say, I am going home for a bit because the city is loud and I can hear myself better near water. You do not need a carousel for any of that. You need one person who remembers the small thing you said three conversations ago.
I keep a short inner list of those people. Loyalty is my least negotiable quiet rule. The list is not a following. It does not grow when I am impressive. It grows when someone stays in the room after the impressive part ends.
Starting over gets sold to us as a personality transplant. New city, new wardrobe, new opinions, new dating app bio that pretends the last two years were a draft. I understand the fantasy. I have stood in front of a wardrobe and wanted the clothes to finish a sentence I could not. A well cut dress can help. Good lighting can help. None of it is a new self. It is a self in better conditions. Conditions matter. They are still not a soul.
The cool girl mask was one kind of performance. The healed girl mask is another. I took the first one off because it made me smaller. I will not put the second one on because it makes me glossy. Gloss is not the same as change. Gloss is lighting. I like lighting. I do not like being told that a ring light is introspection.
There is a particular cruelty in watching women turn their hardest seasons into useful content for other women, then being praised for generosity when what has also happened is that they have been denied a sealed room. I am not telling you to stop writing. I write. I like a long voice note. I like a conversation that turns from clever to honest. Sharing can be intimacy. The question is who it is for. If the answer is an abstract crowd whose love arrives as hearts, I get suspicious. Crowds are inattentive. They will applaud a sentence and miss the woman.
I want us to keep some weather unposted.
Not because shame. Shame is a different tax, and I have no interest in sending women back into silence. Because dignity. Dignity is the right to be unfinished in peace. Starting over is unfinished by definition. You do not know yet which parts of the old life were load bearing. You do not know yet whether the new job will bore you in a different key. You do not know yet whether the man who looks like a second chance is just chemistry in a cleaner shirt. Uncertainty is not a brand flaw. It is the honest temperature of transition.
I count things when I am anxious. Tiles. Steps. Beats in a song. It is regulation dressed as fussiness. Starting over activates the counting. How many weeks since. How many messages unreturned. How many versions of the announcement I drafted and deleted. The deleting was the healthy part. The draft was my nervous system trying to make a public object out of a private wobble. Once I notice I am doing it, I can ask what actually feels unsafe. Usually it is not the absence of a post. Usually it is the absence of a witness who is not also a market.
Find a witness. Not an audience. A witness.
If that sounds precious, I can put it in plainer Essex. Tell one person who has known your face since it was softer. Or tell no one for a fortnight and see whether the change still exists when nobody is clapping. If it only exists as a caption, it was not a change. It was a costume.
I have changed my work without making my work a myth. Behavioural data, research, applied psychometrics. Two degrees that still surprise people who packed me a cartoon. The surprise used to tempt me into over explaining. Look, I am serious. Look, I outscored the room. Look, the accent you heard was not a capacity. That explaining was its own performance, a counter brand, the official exception. I got bored of being a twist in someone else’s sitcom. Now I let the work be work. Starting over in a career can be as quiet as a calendar invite. You do not owe LinkedIn your inner life. You especially do not owe it a parable.
The same is true of the body. Women are harassed into turning every alteration into a before and after. Hair. Weight. The dress that finally feels like you. Pleasure. Even sex gets plotted as a renaissance. I like sex. I am direct about it. I initiate. I want aftercare that includes talking. None of that requires an era name. Desire is allowed to continue without a relaunch. If you left a relationship where you were wanted and not chosen, you do not have to become a different kind of woman to deserve the next choosing. You may need rest. You may need a hotel room with decent lighting and a person who looks at your face. You do not need a manifesto titled “the year I got my fire back.” Fire comes and goes. That is weather too.
Second chances for the self are quieter than second chances for lovers, and they last longer if you do not crowd them. A lover can return with flowers and a speech. A self returns in increments. You notice one morning that you did not scan his socials. You notice you cooked something without photographing it. You notice you went out and danced until you were tired and did not file the night under healing. You just had a night. Ordinary joy is the opposite of a rebrand. It does not need to prove that you have recovered. It is what recovery looks like when it stops advertising.
I think about Freshers sometimes, the feeling of being newly possible, UV paint, a song I did not know I loved yet. That was a sanctioned new self. University hands you one and calls it induction. Even then, the versions that lasted were not the ones I announced. They were the ones I practised. Library until late, then a walk across the park because the conversation would not stop. FED Wednesdays and a Thursday seminar. A first class mark and a taxi queue. The practice made the person. The person did not require a statement of intent.
You can practise now, in whatever transition you are actually in. Practise going home without turning home into a soft life montage. Practise leaving the job without a thread about toxic workplaces that makes you the heroine by noon. Practise ending the situationship on a Tuesday, in ordinary light, without a photo of your keys on the counter. Practise wanting things out loud to the people who can hear you, not to the room that only likes you when you are useful.
I will say I missed you to a person I missed. I will not say I missed myself in a caption as if the algorithm were a lover who needed reassurance. I did not abandon myself. I got tired. I got wiser in patches. I got it wrong and then less wrong. That is not an era. That is a life.
There will be women reading this who feel accused. I do not mean you, if you wrote about your divorce because writing was how you survived it. I do not mean you, if a public sentence kept you from going back to someone who treated your feelings as disposable. Speech can be a doorstop. Use it. I am talking to the other habit, the one that starts to compose the post before the decision has even landed in the body. The one that cannot believe a change is real until a stranger validates the lighting.
That habit will eat your transitions. It will make you loyal to an audience instead of to the short list. It will train you to leave well in a way that photographs, which is not the same as leaving well.
Leaving well, starting well, beginning again: these are ethical acts. They have witnesses. They have consequences. They do not always have a colour palette.
If I am starting over in any given year, and I am, a little, always, because a life that does not revise itself is a museum, I do it like this. I tell the inner list. I go to Essex when I need the original voice. I keep the work clean. I wear the dress that feels like me, not the dress that signals a plot twist. I let the new want be specific. Specificity is rude to myth, and myth is what the feed does to women in motion. I date, when I date, without calling it a new chapter in public. Chapters are for books. People are not books, even when they write.
And I leave room to be wrong. That is the part the rebrand cannot bear. A brand new personality has to be right immediately or the story wobbles. A human self can try a city and come back. Try a man and leave on Tuesday. Try silence and then want a night out. Try the night out and want the library. Collision, not lanes. I have never been interested in lanes.
Perhaps this is only another way of saying self possession. Not polish. Not a quieter feed as moral superiority. Self possession is knowing which transformations are yours and which are content shaped like a transformation. You can tell the difference by what happens if nobody sees. If the change continues in the unobserved hours, it is yours. If it peters out without a reaction, it was a performance that needed a house.
I want the unobserved hours back for us. The ones in which you make the tea and do not narrate the tea. The ones in which you cry without turning the cry into solidarity on a grid. The ones in which you laugh at yourself for counting tiles and then stop counting because the floor is just a floor. Starting over lives in those hours. It does not live in the announcement.
So if your life is turning, let it turn. Tell the woman who will not make you useful. Go home if home is still a true sentence. Stay if staying is the braver revision. Cut the hair because you want the air on your neck, not because a camera needs a symbol. Take the job. Leave the boy. Keep the coastline. Do not become a stranger to yourself just because strangers are easier to entertain than a real revision.
You are allowed to change without becoming a new product. You are allowed to be weather. Weather moves through a place and leaves it altered and does not ask for reviews.
Be altered. Be unreviewed for a while. Then, if you still want to speak, speak like a person, not like a launch. I will hear that voice. I always do. It sounds like a woman who has stopped performing the plot and started living in the room. That is the only starting over I trust.
